I think the reading proposals will be interesting. I thinks we will all learn something more about the subjects we picked and the one that other students chose. Its unlike other projects we have done in this class so far because we get to pick the subject we are presenting on. I think when you are more interested in a subject you are more willing to look into it and find reasush and want to share what you have found. Also when everyone is presenting the same subject(s) it gets rather repetitive and you lose interest in the presentations. I'm excited to look into my subject which is the evolution of female roles in literature. I don't have a crystal clear idea of where I'm going to go with it but I think that might be better because then I will be more open to the lecturer I read and can be more honest to the work. Where if I had a clear and concise Idea all the way through then I might struggle with the pieces I chose if they didn't completely match up with what I was trying to say. Also with the type of style we are going to be presenting in I think I will do better than I did in my last presentation because there are not supposed to be any words in the slides and last time Cailin and I had too many long paragraphs when they should have been short bulleted sentences. helpful exampels of the type of persention we'er doing http://www.pechakucha.org/watch http://plaza.ufl.edu/jess16/MultiplePerspectives/

I have decided the I don't care for Greek tragedies at least not the ones that I have read. I like the Greek myths and there still considered tragedy , so I guess I can't generalize it. I find that I feel no pity for the main characters such as Oedsuies They always seem ignorant and conceited and rather self centered. you brought this upon yourself is the initial thought that goes through my head. I pity the other characters that suffer because of the chosese made by the main male character.
When I compair Oedysius to later tragedies like shaperpers Hamlet and Romeo and Juliet. There Is also the personal flaws involded in these works but there more suddel and are also surouned by unforunet serenstances. The untimely death of romero is his own falt for being young and too quick to action it is also fault to the fryer and the plegue that caueds the gates to be closed and blocked him form deliveriong his letter. Hamlet on ther other had in mostley the reson for his downfall but you have to give him creaed because he's trying to fixs things but everything he dose only makes things worse. The TED talked was a little divicult to realt to tragedy at fist glance , Well I guess no really. If I hadn't been looking for a conection to tragedy I don't think I would have found one. I notice how this week our creative writing on tuesday connected with our new unit on tragedy. Well not necessarily connected but I felt it put me in a better mindset to learn about tragedy and connecting with other works I have read. I feel bad for the subs when we have them in this class because they never seem quiter shur what to do and there nots don't always line up with what we have on the agenda on weebly. I like that we mixed up partners for the partner notes. Being able to talk to someone new what really helpful and insightful. I also like how after reading the Tragedy of the Commons piece we did that save the last word exercise. I was helpful to look at the same concepts from a different angel. After showing are presentation when watching the presentations by other groups I had a better understanding of what was expected for the presentation. I found my self guessing what there great would be compared to ours . I feel like Grace Zimmerman and Lauren did the best. I think it would have been helpful when you were walking around talking to the groups if you had shown us the rubric and how what we had would grad and what we need to do to improve, I think I would have help put things in prospective.
In starting to like my SSR book I like how the book is written like little memories cut out and pieced together I feel like in the end there all supported to come together to mean something but I do not know what that I or if I will get it. There are both pros and cons to working in a group. One of which is getting a second opinion on your work. Like how when you write something and in your head it makes sense but your writing it really fast because you're afraid you're going to forget what you're trying to say, and in the end it it's all scrambled. Having a partner is also helpful for when you are unsure about a topic, For example after reading The Very Old Man With Enormous Wings I had a difficult time deciding what point of view it was written in. Being able to talk with Cailin about it after she had read the piece we were able to go back and look at our packets and take the information that that we knew and by process of elimination figure it out. Con is that you or members of your group can get distracted and get off topic. Cailin dose a lot of the work on the Prezi. I appreciate that she's taking annotative, but I wish that she would talked to me before she starts creating stuff so I new what was happening and got the chance to agree or disagree with what she was doing. It also makes me feel like I'm not contributing as much. Usually what I do is go back through what she's done and read through and talk to her about editing some parts. I think it is important to be comfortable discussing thing with your group and to be countuertabe with letting other look at your work and give constructive criticism. I'm worried I'm not going to like my new SSR book. This week I chose A Portrait of The Artist as a Young Man. I've notice as well when reading the summaries of the books when choosing from the list that I do not relate with a majority of the books at least with their plot and the characters background. But maybe the point of reading them is to be able to look past the characters generalized background and relate to them through there personalities and empathizes with there general situation and not there exacted predicament. http://www.psychologicalscience.org/publications/observer/2014/september-14/literary-character.html The majority of this week was spent working on our What is Literature project. Cailin and I have started to create the fantasy portion of the prezi. We also worked on editing and finalizing our creative writing pieces. Most of my work that I put in the the final piece was done in my novel class. the first piece Women in Midnight was the first pieces I wrote in novel this years and it is still my favorite piece. The other two pieces were started in AP Lit but I took the time in novel to expand on them. I think I like the first piece so much because it's different than anything I have written before in the way I described what was happening and also how the whole pisces is shadowed in mystery mostly because I didn't know what I was writing. The story just formed out of itself which mad the mystery of it just as exciting to me as I might be to a reader. For that same reason however I am worried that it will not be any good because there is no clear direction that I'M trying to take. Publish authors can spend years creating a plot for their stories and developing their characters including little breadcrumbs through the story to weave everything together. For now at least I think I have a really good start. I have an Idea that I can exspand on and contuneue to devlop this story. http://www.writersdigest.com/online-editor/how-to-develop-any-idea-into-a-great-story gives some helpful advies on how to exspand on an idea and develp it into a " Great Story". In this the fifth week of AP Lit we began to form our groups for the What is literature project. My group ,which consists of Cailin and me, choose to do our projected on Fantasy and Point of view. We started working on the fantasy portion of the project but have not gotten into the point of view section to avoid getting them confused. We are read The Most Dangerous Game for the first of the three works . I read this story in 9th grade and while reading the papers that help expand our literary sections I kept finding ways to relate The Most Dangerous Game to fantasy. Fanticy from my understanding is a way to communicate truths by means of imagined facts. There are three types of fantasy . In the First kind of fantasy the writer attempts to create an illusion of reality, they are careful to stay in the realm of plausible. The second type of fantasy involves a realm in which the writer has created their own realm of reality this type involves what you typically envision when you think of fantasy made up realms with magical creatures and mythical beings. The third is known as magical realism in which magical events are interwoven with mundane and ordinary situations. This is often when mythical creatures, i.e vampires, werewolves and such, are placed in a setting of the real world this type of fantasy is most popularly used in young adult novels such as Harry Potter , Twilight, Percy Jackson and countless others. The main point of fantasy in general is to take a deeper look into humanity to reveal " human truths" Fantasy can be employed "sheerly for its own sake or as a means of communication significant insights into the world of human beings." The may not be made of fact and true accounts but they can be used to convey a truth in humanity or a society. http://teachers.yale.edu/curriculum/viewer/initiative_06.03.08_u This week we watched a ted talk in class . The speaker discusses how at an art gallery we may not like all of the art on display. You might not feel a deep connection with every piece we see, and that's okay. She stated that we are selective in most other things in life ,what clothes we pick to wear , the food we eat the music we listen to etc. So why shouldn't we be selective with the art we look at. Being selective also applies to what types of books we read. We are not going to connect with every book we pick up and decided to read . It's just a fact, but it's okay that you don't you shouldn't because every book although some are more similar to each other than others are different. The imagery was also a topic in class this week. We learned about different types of imagery while discussing Emily Dickinson poem I Felt a Funeral in my Brain. Most imagery is thought to be visual at least in the eyes of the reader but in the eyes of the speaker, there are different ways to use imagery . I alway saw imagery as visual I mean it's in the name image imagination. Image equaled mental imagination of something. I never thought to look at it through the eyes of the speaker when looking into poetery. :This week we worked on our comparative group essays. Later in the week we discussed how to per edidit a work and the were paired up with another group to share our rough drafts. Part of learning how to peer edit that is different the in previous years is the we are not looking at spelling and grammar mistakes but instead we are looking to see if the essay makes sense and if it flows in a way that in understandable to the reader. We learned how the brain functions and how each side works left for logic. Often times when I am writing I know what I am trying to say so it is easy to understand , but when I go back and read through my work I do not always catch the parts that are a pit confusing. I have also notice that working on a group essay the other members of the group also work as a peer edit. My group and I broke our essay into portions by picking three chapters from how to read a book like a professor and then having each person write about how the two summer reading books apply to there chapter. Miss Josephine gave some examples on what to ask the writers and what to be looking for in the writing. Other things that can help to peer edit can be found at this link:http://writing2.richmond.edu/writing/wweb/peeredit.html This week we began our work on our summer reading essay. I have never done a group essay before. On one side I expected it to go by faster because there is less work per individual. I have come to realize that that is probably no the case. It is difficult for three people who likely have different interpretations of the books to write an essay that flows smoothly. In the past week we work with the poem The Eagle I found that the fact the poem was a short poem made it more difficult at the end of the week to write the timed essay. There were so many different options on what the poem "meant" and what the eagle represented that were far more in-depth than I had originally taken the poem to mean. The idea surrounding what a word or phrase mean Individually did not alway make sense when put back into the poem. I also had difficulty in understanding what the questions about the poem during the week were asking me to do. It was also a little confusing when using both the essay prompt and the second link that described how to write the response to the original prompt. I have decided that it might have been better if I had answered the original prompt and the proceeded to elaborate on my answers and create a thesis from it at the end instead of at the beginning. The first protection of the Prezi in this link helps to explain how to better understand an essay prompt for poetry that will be on the AP exam. https://prezi.com/hsvfd3whs7xs/how-to-dissect-essay-prompts-for-the-ap-lit-exam/ |
