I have a problem with using Snowfall as an example for the writing. The web design is incredible and I’m excited about creating something like it.However the writing is a Journalistic article based on actual events with facts as well as a report done in a creative native story. I understand how we are meant to deconstruct SnowFall for this project. Major environmental event, how it affects character's, history of actual location and time period book takes place, importante characters in the novel and how they are apart of or affected by the big question we are asking. However I don't feel Snowfall as a literary piece is the best example for what we are trying to do. I have a feeling that I am going to make this up as a go whiles staying relatively within the structure provird. Melissa probably won't like it and will be worried that I’m not following the assignment correctly. But I have decided that the institutions are intentionally vague to allow creative freedom. We had some struggles when looking for quotes. We wanted to be sure that they were spread out through the book. In the beginning we found the answers to our big question that yes society does put too much pressure on arbitrary goals like success we found many quotes to support this. but at we got closer to the end of the book it became more of a what happens when a society puts too much pressure on arbitrary goals like success. So we looked instead on the effects the answer to our question had on the characters of the book. Gifs are really helpful: http://giphy.com/gifs/got-get-run-SWKyABQ08mbXW/links

Lot of time reading this week. I’m going to worry about the writing after I finish the book but i've been marking some quotes. I know yesterday we made the web page yesterday. The main social issue that pushed Okonkwo is that he does not want to be like his father. I think he focused too much on this and it clouds his judgment which will lead to his downfall. He is driven by fears looking weak so he beats his wives and children and kills Ikemefuna even after being told not to be the one that kills him, afraid his sons will be weak and lazy so he pushes them hard in the field and shows them no affection, afraid of failure.
I have been listening to the book on and off on youtube. Listening to the audiobook I have found is very helpful with the difficult names and words. It is also really great because it helps me stay focused on the book so I do not get distracted and read the same sentence five times. I can also multitask and listen to it in interior design while picking out fabrics, then when I hear a good quote I pause it and look it up in the book and take a snapshot of it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=30UH90u1x28 Slide design The video on slide design was very helpful it helped show how to create a well organized presentation. Connecting our theme with outside sources was helpful in the fact that when looking into articles about our them or books others can make connection between thing that you may not have seen originally. This tir was the easiest I had academically this year I did this on purpose because extracurricularly I am the most busy this time of year. It also gave me a chance to work on scholarships for college. However I worried that when I get into next try that my time management skills will not be as good as they have been in the past at least for the first few weeks. Whilst working on my independent reading presentation I've been going back and forth working on the presentation slides show and the paper I think it helps me to make it flow better and their more cohesive.
http://plaza.ufl.edu/jess16/MultiplePerspectives/ When it came to recording my piece i found that doing it in short section was better because then there was less time for background noise to come in. I have also found that when recording that I edited my paper ,taking some things out and adding in other things. I've had a difficult time competing this pice because I'm never in a place where it quitel and I can work on the recording or I can not get to the images that I want. I have not even started on the background music because I want to finish piecing the speech together so i get a feel for what I want. Also I have misplaced the notebook that has the edited paper that I've been using to record so in some spots In starting over but I remember most of the edit that I made. SSR is going well I think I like this book the most out of any that I've read for AP LIT so far. The way it is written is similar to Caramelia in the way they are a series of stories about the main characters and their families. http://paulgraham.com/talk.html When it come to the the TED talks we watch on Monday I wish I had had the time to watch the the rest of the TED talks. The one I watched J.J Abrams The Mystery Box. which was alright, some thing i noticed in his TED talk how he goes back into his memories and tries to understand why he believes what he believes and goes through this process with the audience. His story evolves around his grandfather who inspired and encouraged him. He uses visual prompts to support his point. The clips of film, the mystery box that he never opened. But I feel I could have learned more from the other Ted talks.
I have my paper written for the I believe but it's about 800 word so I might have to cut and edit it.I have trouble sometimes deciphering what is important and what is just too much detail. Also writing how I talk is rather difficult because my brain separates the two and as soon as I start writing I start editing and changing words. I got a lot more emotional writing this piece then I thought I would. Which is why I'm glad we are recording the papers and not speaking in front of the class. It felt sort of therapeutic to write about it and I feel better it. https://zenhabits.net/the-first-rule-of-simplifying-identify-the-essential-or-how-to-avoid-the-void/ I enjoyed doing the debates. In AP and Honors classes debates are usually very exiting because you have a group of people who are very intelligent and not only read information thats given to them but generally form an opinion on it as well. One of the things my group did when preparing for the debate was consider what the other side of the debate would say in an attempt to rove we where wrong witch I think was helpful to us when we got back to the room. Pros being that we didn't have to spend so much time looking up sources and we got to spend more time with the works we were given. So when writing are pice we knew ore resources well.Cons are that we didcons being that we only hand a linmited amount of information on the subject and alos the the informatin in the artical might have been slitly dateed. for examperl Obamas Privasy Bill of Righs was brought befor congress and turned down in 2011. Im hoping next week when we get back to our regular lesson plans that we will have more time to read our SSR books but I am not all too concerned about it, yet. http://debate-central.ncpa.org/the-12-best-debate-tips-weve-ever-heard/ I am very happy to be finish with this project juts because i know my group and I worked very hard on and also because it felt like it was dragging on forever because we had started it before winter break and then kept having to move the due date back due to snow days. While working on it I realized a lot of other thing about the work that didn't necessary fit in with the main point what what we where trying to say but where still good consecrates. For example Shakespeare is the fool. In King Lear the fool can speak truth to power but plays it off as to not insult those in power.
I was worried that I would have a difficult time writing my Free response essay for the marking periods SSR book because I finished it such a Long time ago but after finishing it I feel pretty confident in it. I had a strong option about the pieces and I knew what direction I wanted to take it in. How Daisy Millers refuses to conform to society and how her death represents her societal demise. https://haquelebac.wordpress.com/2011/08/16/why-did-henry-james-kill-daisy-miller/ I found it really helpful and insightful to talk to Dr. Mickdrement ( i dont remeber how to spell her name but this looks funeticaly decent) about our critical theory project. For a while I have been unsure about the theory we pick and was having a hard time finding connection between King Lear and the Marxism theory. She was really encouraging and supportive of the theory we choses and helped a lot when she told us where to look in the play and expand the scen. She said the best scene for us to look at was the one where King Lear is standing out in the storm, and he realizes how hes abuseds his power as a monarch and how little he understood of the system that he benefited from. When we initially watched this scene it was very confusing there was a lot going on and I didn't understand what they were saying or what it meant. She was also really helpful when we asked her where we should look for other texts and literature that we could use as examples in our paper, I feel like both Ian and I were unsure of where to look or what exactly we were looking for. I think I'd like to look more into why Shasper is still so popular today I know whe expland that its because his story lines are still rlatabe to audeces today and his works held more emotional involment then other writers of the time but I like to know why we as homans feel so emotional invested to the topics of his plots. Thats really something I would look into during college propably but it feels like an important question to state and consider. I finished Daisy Miller over break and think it will work really well for my SSR project. I've just started to read Women Warrior by Maxine Hong and when getting it from the Library discovered that it's a non- Fic biography so I'm a little worried about it because you saide non fic could be more difficult to work with and from what I've read it's a little difficult to understand but I found out that The copy I have might be a translated version meaning it wasn't original written in english so some of the translation could be a bit off. I might look for a different copy or just pick a different book altogether, I figured I have time to decide since I finished my other book early. A Link I found for our paper that I believe is going to be really helpful is this: http://community.boredofstudies.org/325/module-b-critical-study-texts/104882/king-lear-marxist-interpretation.html I am worried that the critical theory that we choose will not relate to King Lear at all. There are not any obvious connections that I can see between our research and notes and the play. If we are going to find conduction I think we will have to use the Marxism Theory in a very broad term. Maybe we could assess the differences between the joker and the royal family or the rise and fall and then rise again of Edgar. How he starts off as the eldest legitimate son and then loses it all and then latter regain the title and station he originally possessed and more. Or that fact that the family that cared for the lords land assist him when he is blind and no one else will help him. Marxism in what I understand from the articles we read is about the power struggle of different economical classes. However in King Lear there is mainly one class , the highest class on the food chain so there is not a large range of people to look at. And those of a lower class have very minor parts or are more in with the court then the regular lower classes of the time. After the death of the Fool things started moving quickly and became difficult to understand to I started to fallow along on spark notes to get a better understanding of the piece.
http://www.sparknotes.com/shakespeare/lear/ My group and I are really anciouse or intrested to watch the plays. I think we are hoping that after watching it we will have a better graps on what kinds of conctions we can make and what kinds ofquestions to ask/ answer. We finished the notes rather quikly I think by Wednesday we had answers for everything and thrusday was mostly spent reading the nothes you left and tweeking it abit. I think the reson for this is that we are more acustome to the way we take notes in this class wich is rather different to other classes we have had because its all online and more self gudied. Although the self guided par is alot like APUSH but faster. Also don't know if Im going to like group work I found tha I really like working on my own with the tragedy project.
Also when looking though the different theroy opption the femminist critacal threy mathched really welol with what I'm trying to do for my SSR presentation so Im going to try and ues the questions it has as a helpful gude line. For exapmle one of the questions was "How are women depicted, treated or discussed in this text?". In Daisy Miller I notice how at the very beganing ther is a significan differences in how they intoduse the two main charaters. Winterbore an male is noted for his place of educatin, hise mannerismes and inetlexul qualitys they never mention his appernce or it is very berif and undsribtive. Howevery when we first meat Daisy Miller the first thing that the writhr talkes about is her apperence, susifcaly her clothes, and ger hair and later her face and complection in great detail. Witerborn refuers to her as "The pertty American girl" in his head. And when they describer herfeteds it not something like "intelagent eyse" or something at all the relats to the fact that she is a perssone who has the combasity to have deep intalextual thoughts. Latere winter bore juges hermaned to see if they fallow sociatal norms or rules for that matter. Also the writing is alot like Frankenstien in the sences that they use alot of natuier and that its nore about what people are saying and how they interact wher as the last fw book I've read like The portiat of the artis as a yougn man have been more abot one bersons imteral thoughts and feelings, this new book I there for esar to undersatnd becauwe what ther saying is closer to what hey mean. Starting up the POWs againg, something I like them ,most of the time ,usally if I don't inshaly conect with the poem and can't form Ideas about it its hared for me to witrs about them. Thats likely becuses I can be too crital of thing when I don't undersand which I suppose Is a human falt. Anyway i like bothe of the pomes this week and could see how they conected with there pordxes and ideas on time and death and forgetting lifes, It took longer though whe writing my pice to comect them exspcally when we haven done it in awhel and also I couldn't remeber where to find that actual question / promt for the POWs so I when off memory. http://apcentral.collegeboard.com/apc/public/repository/ap12_english_lit_q1.pdf http://www.critical-theory.com/ |
